I am trying to get some confirmation on this.
The British tabloid, The Daily Mirror, and some right-wing sites are reporting the FBI and CIA are hunting down a sleeper cell in the Boston area.
A source close to the investigation said: “We have no doubt the brothers were not acting alone. The devices used to detonate the two bombs were highly sophisticated and not the kind of thing people learn from Google.
Here is the shocker.
More than 1,000 FBI operatives were last night working to track down the cell and arrested a man and two women 60 miles from Boston in the hours before Dzhokhar’s dramatic capture after a bloody shootout on Friday.
The right-wing site, News Busters, along with Matt Drudge, are also saying that Boston Mayor Menino is denying the reports, but he apparently seemed to contradict himself that was cited in an AP story.
The brief AP report’s third paragraph then has Menino saying, again in AP’s words, that “another person was taken into custody” after “a pipe bomb was found in another location.” This apparent inconsistency seems to be an attempt by the mayor to minimize the degree of homegrown “sleeper cell” concerns, especially in light of reports containing a cascade of contradicting details…
Still, News Busters makes a good point. Why is a UK-publication breaking this story when the US news outlets would have better sources with the FBI and the CIA. The contention here is that the US government is hiding something.
Experts have given us the belief, it seems, that the bombs were constructed from everyday items that could be bought from local stores and information found on Google. This needs to be fleshed out.
I sent messages to sources in intelligence.
No one can confirm this report.
But the chance of jihadist cells in the US, Canada, and Europe waiting for years to attack is not outlandish. Remember 10 of the 9-11 hijackers were in Boston or took two flights on that day.
But, if this is true, this is not good for all the government’s efforts to stop this.
I’ll keep you posted.
