Obama’s Same-Sex Decision

by John on 05/09/2012

President Obama’s decision to stand behind same sex marriage is gutsy and political.  But it is really no big surprise.

Here’s what might be happening:

Obama is banking on history.  Some say his announcement today is a watershed moment in American Civil Rights history.  They’re comparing it to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

He’s also banking on losing the South anyway.  The number of people in favor of same-sex marriage is much higher in the northern states.  Watch if he concentrates his efforts in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Obama is also looking at demographics.  The younger generation is made up of immigrants and mixed marriages; they adhere less to established religion, and thus don’t have hang-ups about their gay friends.  Obama is banking on the younger generation to energize his base like 2008.  The youth have to go to the polls and campaign for him – to make it happen.

It might also mean the economy is not going to be pretty for a few months.  Same-sex marriage might occupy the GOP and its massive bribers.

Put same-sex marriage in the spotlight now – months before the election.  Voters in swing states might not be as transfixed on the issue by November.  He’s hoping that somewhat moderate right-wing states like North Carolina will still back him in November.

And Joe Biden is coming out of the closet as a lesbian.  It doesn’t make him a bad person.

Just seeing if you’re paying attention.
